But here's the question: does anyone else know?
Chances are, the answer is no. Your experiments live in your chat history. Your best prompts sit in a personal note somewhere. The workflow that changed how you work? It's never left your head.
And you're not alone. Whether you're an individual building your own capability or part of a team trying to scale - the pattern is the same. Across teams, across organisations, across the industry - people are building AI fluency in isolation. Everyone's charting their own path. Everyone's solving the same problems from scratch. Everyone's reinventing what someone else already figured out.
We call this the discovery gap. And it's where compounding capability goes to die. The tools aren't broken - but single-player AI is broken for teams. You can't scale what stays in one person's head.
We've Seen This Before
The pattern is familiar. Cloud 1.0 was just "the same software, but online." The real breakthrough came later - with collaboration.
Google Docs beat Word. Figma beat Sketch. Notion beat Evernote. Investors from the likes of a16z and YC have recently observed: every single-player tool eventually lost to its multi-player counterpart. And the same transformation is coming to AI.
We're already seeing early signals. OpenAI's pilot of ChatGPT group chats, where AI participates in a shared thread with multiple humans. This points toward AI that fits naturally into team dynamics, not just individual workflows.
Right now, most AI tools are built for one human and one model in a private workspace. ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor. Incredibly powerful, but optimised for individuals. The output is massive: drafts, code, specs, campaigns, workflows. But almost none of it is shared, aligned, or contextualised across a team.
AI 1.0 gave individuals superpowers. AI 2.0 will give teams superpowers. And just like cloud, single-player tools will go multi-player - or get replaced.

The Playbook Problem
The internet is full of AI advice. "Here's my 10x productivity prompt." "Comment SKILLS and I'll send you my system." Feeds overflow with promises of shortcuts and secrets.
So you comment. You download. You try it. And it doesn't quite work.
Not because the advice is bad, but because context is everything. What worked for a solo marketer won't translate to an enterprise procurement team. What works in Claude might fail in Gemini. What worked last month might not work after the latest model update.
The playbook problem isn't a content problem. There's no shortage of templates. The problem is:
- No proof the playbook actually worked
- No context about where it worked
- No way to verify before you invest time
- No adaptation path for your situation
- No way to keep it updated as model updates shift the landscape
People aren't failing because they can't find playbooks. They're failing because playbooks without context are just noise. And the signal-to-noise ratio is getting worse.
This leaves people feeling lost, or worse, removed from the space entirely as their saved posts pile up unopened.
Our research uncovered that some pay thousands to join communities - and while the connections are real, the promised use cases often don't materialise. They stay for the like-minded people, not the results. The templates are out there. The value isn't.
And it gets worse when you factor in the tools themselves. According to a16z, only 9% of users pay for more than one AI model. Not because they're loyal, but because switching is exhausting. Evaluating what's better about another model, rerunning the same experiments, managing yet another subscription - it's cognitive and financial overload.
So people stay with what they know, even when something better might exist. The discovery gap isn't just about finding playbooks. It's about finding what works, where, and for whom.
The AI Silo Tax
Even inside organisations, the same pattern plays out.
Someone on the marketing team figures out a workflow that cuts reporting time in half. Someone in product discovers a prompting technique that accelerates spec writing. Someone in sales builds a system for personalised outreach that actually converts.
And none of them know about each other.
In our interviews with 95 leading AI practitioners, this was one of the clearest patterns: knowledge stays locked in individual heads. Even when teams use the same tools, they're solving the same problems separately.
Duplication of effort has always been a problem. But AI has amplified it to the point where we can't ignore it anymore. The speed of experimentation has exploded, which means the cost of reinvention has too. Every team is paying the "AI silo tax" - solving problems that have already been solved elsewhere, not out of laziness, but because there's no mechanism for discovery. No way to surface what's working. No infrastructure to share, verify, and build on each other's experiments.
This is the coordination problem Sam Altman hinted at when he said "Slack creates fake work." The volume of communication has exploded, but the signal hasn't improved. AI has made it worse - more output, more experiments, more breakthroughs, all invisible to the people who could benefit most.
This is part of why enterprise AI stickiness is increasing while individual adoption dips - a pattern Ramp data confirmed in late 2025. The tools are getting better. But without discovery - without a way to see what's working and build on it - most people never find their way in.

What Multi-Player Actually Means
Multi-player AI isn't just "sharing prompts in a Slack channel." It's building the infrastructure for collective intelligence.
Discovery: Can people find what's already been figured out - before they start from scratch? Not just within their team, but across the organisation? The best AI products already know this. When you open ChatGPT, you see trending themes, suggested styles, examples of what's working. It shows you what's possible before you type a single word. That's discovery in action at the product level. Your organisation needs the same.
Context: Can they see where it worked, how it was used, what made it effective? Not just the output, but the conditions?
Verification: Can they tell what actually delivered results versus what just looked good? Is there proof, or just promises?
Adaptation: Can they take someone else's experiment and build on it for their context? Not copy, but compound. Can they reproduce it reliably, or is it just a one-time trick?
Current AI tools aren't built for teams. They don't carry organisational memory, shared goals, or decision history across users - each person starts from scratch.
They optimise for one user, one session, one output - not for how teams actually work together over time.
This is the shift from AI as a personal tool to AI as organisational infrastructure. From private experiments to shared capability. From single-player to multi-player. This is the collaboration layer and most organisations don't have one.
Closing The Discovery Gap
The companies that win the next phase of AI adoption won't be the ones with the best individual practitioners. They'll be the ones who figured out how to make knowledge flow.
Where someone's breakthrough becomes everyone's starting point. Where experimentation compounds across teams, not just within heads. Where the question isn't "how do I figure this out?" but "has anyone already figured this out?"
This requires more than culture change. It requires infrastructure - systems that capture experiments, surface what works, reward the creators, and make it easy to build forward instead of starting over. Without recognition, sharing feels like giving away your edge. With it, sharing becomes how you build your reputation.
The discovery gap is where AI ROI quietly leaks. Stop the leakage, and you stop paying the AI silo tax. You stop reinventing and start compounding, together.
The proof gap showed us why we can't demonstrate the value of AI. The skills gap showed us we can't build fluency alone. And now the discovery gap shows us why we can't scale what works.
